Many commentators and academics point to deeper structural forces behind the decline of the high street: the long tail of the 2008 financial crisis, changing consumer habits, and the rise of out-of-town retail parks. These developments shifted retail away from traditional high streets towards, enclosed, car-friendly complexes where convenience and parking trump the historic streetscape.
