There is low awareness best practices for waste reduction in the constgruction industry.
The market is not solving this issue, and there is a lack of structural incentive to reduce waste. Zero Waste Scotland has a critical role in driving change across the industry, and in tackling the barriers to adopting best practice. Its potential for advocating for legislative change, de-risking innovation to reduce the barriers to best practice adoption, engaging with SMEs to build capacity, and providing guidance and support to those motivated to adopt best practice, can all help to drive positive change. Participants validated that this change is beginning with those who are already motivated to adopt best practice, but they are in the minority; to get the whole sector to shift, and to see this cascade across the whole built environment value chain, a policy intervention will be needed. By taking these decisive actions, Zero Waste Scotland can facilitate and help enable industry towards a more sustainable future, driving significant reductions in waste and fostering a culture of innovation and best practice adoption
