The National Gaelic Language Plan is an instrument of somewhat questionable value, liable to be overruled
by subsequent developments and government policy decisions. Previous iterations have been vague, poorly
structured, and included unrealistic targets for increasing numbers of speakers and in GME.
Although the recent new draft national plan (2023–27) is somewhat better, it has been released against the
backdrop of the current policymaking process which might significantly change the landscape of Gaelic
policy, potentially making elements of the next national plan obsolete.
