In 2007, the Labour Party were very narrowly defeated in the Scottish Parliament elections by the SNP under Alex Salmond. With Scotland going to the polls on 3rd May, the SNP emerged victorious, winning 47 seats, an increase of 20 for the party. Scottish Labour lost four seats, winning a total of 46 seats, which meant that they lost to the SNP by just one MSP.
